MOSCOW STATE UNIVERSITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
Department of Geodesics

History

The department of Geodesics has been in existence from the 3rd of December of 1865 - from the day when Petrov Agricultural Academy was founded - and is one of the oldest Geodesics departments in the country.

The first Head of the department of Geodesics was Professor A.P. Zakharov. For four years he was also Chancellor of the Academy.

From 1894 to 1916 the department was led by Professor I.A. Iveronov, who was also the Chancellor of the Academy from 1909 to1916. The course of Geodesics was significantly reworked by Professor Iveronov and brought to modern standards.

From 1916 to 1954 and ñ 1960 to 1964 the department was led by Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences P.M. Orlov. As a pupil and follower of I. A. Iveronov Professor Orlov continued the development of progressive ideas of his mentor. Professor Orlov has also published a textbook in Geodesics.

In 1930 the department of Geodesics was handed over to the Moscow Hydro-melioration Institute and equipped appropriately for the period.

From 1954 to 1960 Professor, DSc L.S. Hrenov was the Head of the department. A collection of lectures read by Professor Hrenov was published, as well as a set of special tables used in Geodesics and compiled by the staff of the department.

From 1964 to 1974 Docent, Dr. V. M. Golubkin was the Head of the department. He wrote a book on Geodesics for Technical Education. In the same period the staff of the department prepared methodological recommendations for the laboratory practice.

From 1974 to 1982 Docent, Dr. Yu. M. Trunin was the Head of the department. Departmental research of that period concerns the use of photogram-metrics. The staff of the department also prepared a Laboratory Practicum in Geodesics.

From 1982 to 1998 the department was led by Professor, Dr. E.M. Ryvina. By that time the department of Geodesics had become the leading department of the tertiary institutions in Melioration in Russia. The department presided over the special Committee which included the department of Geodesics of all tertiary institutions and Faculties in Melioration. A textbook in Geodesics was published, the educational process was equipped with the appropriate teaching and methodological aids. Research was oriented towards the studies of the dynamics of change of the coastal zone.

From 1998 onwards Docent, Dr. L.P. Neupokoev has been the Head of the department.

The staff of the Department of Geodesics consists of 7 members: 1 Professor, 2 Docents, 4 Senior Lecturers.
