Department of Hydraulics

History

The Department of Hydraulics was founded in 1919 as part of the engineering section of the Moscow Agricultural Institute (currently Moscow Agricultural Academy). In 1921, a difficult period for the country, the Institute was allocated finances for the building of a laboratory of hydraulic equipment. The laboratory was equipped in 1924 and its founder was Professor A. Ya. Milovich. Since then the department has being actively participating in the research and design of hydro-electric constructions like Adzharis-Tshalsk, Volkhov, Dniper electro-stations and in irrigation systems. The Laboratory has played important role in the development and calibration of fluvial hydrometric current meters.   A. Ya. Milovich led the department up till 1931. At various times since 1931 to 1940 the department was led by Professors B.N.Kuznetsov, K. A. Mikhailov, V.V.Vedernikov.   A prominent role in the development of the department and the subject of Hydraulics was played by Honored Scientist of Russian Federation, Professor, DSc I. I. Agroskin. He was also the Head of the department from 1940 to 1968 and united a group of talented followers.   More than 50 of his students successfully presented their PhD Theses and 3 - DSc theses. He developed a series of new methods of hydraulic calculations. Together with the scientific research he efficiently organized the educational process, wrote textbooks and teaching aids.   The department conducts teaching of Hydraulics in all Faculties for all specialties. Prof. I. I. Agroskin, Docent G.T. Dmitriev and Prof. F.M. Pikalov have written the fundamental textbook "Hydraulics" which has been published in four editions in the USSR and has been translated into Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Korean and Chinese.   After the death of I. I. Agroskin the department was led by his pupil Docent, Dr. N. Kremenetsky.   Since 1975 until now the Head of the department is Prof., DSc D.V.Shterenliht - also from I. I. Agroskin's school.   In 1974 the Laboratory "Hydraulics" was established. In the laboratory the problems of hydraulics of canals, rivers, hydro-constructions etc. are being studied.   MSc and PhD student are also studying in the department.   Students traditionally participate in the research of the department. Many of the student works have been highly commended. Many students have become prominent specialists, scientists, teachers.   Members of the staff have written textbooks, teaching aids and every year they publish the results of their research, participate in international conferences, help other institutions in Russia and abroad with the research, design and construction of various objects related to water economy.
