The department was established in 1938 by colonel I.I. Kabalov. The military education used to be conducted according to a special program in the second year. In the fourth year the students required to undertake military service had a 2-month field practice.
In 1941 the students participated in the construction of defense structures of Moscow, helped in restoration of destroyed structures and buildings, and in the hospitals.
Many students and academics were mobilized and sent to the front.
The military preparation (for men and women) was recommenced in 1944. Major V.N. Yakovenko was the appointed Head of the department.
