MOSCOW STATE UNIVERSITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
History
Department of Theoretical Mechanics and TMM
The department was established in 1930 by prominent scientists G.G. Appelrot and A.F. Maslov.
Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences G.G. Appelrot was one of the first pupils of N.E. Zhukovsky. His contribution to the theory of motion of solid bodies and analytical theory of differential equations is very substantial.
The first head of the department DSc, Professor A.F. Maslov was active until 1951. He achieved important results in the area of geometrical theory of surfaces.
In 1951 a new course "Theory of Mechanisms and Machines" (TMM) was introduced. At that time the department was led by another pupil of N.E. Zhukovsky - DSc, Professor V.A. Goransky. He is well know by his work in durability of ships and theory of synthesis of mechanisms. He is the author of a convenient method of calculation of pressure in kinematical pairs.
From 1955 to 1983 the department was led by DSc, Professor M.V. Korovchinsky, prominent specialist in the area of corrosion.
From 1983 the department has been led by DSc, Professor L. Ya. Kosachevsky, prominent scientist in mechanics and electrodynamics of solid mediums. He substantially contributed to the theory of propagation of sound waves in porous and layered mediums and is one of the founders of the theory of magnet elasticity.
